The United States last month sent a new batch of troops to a Polish NATO outpost bordering Russia that immediately accused Washington of violating a peace treaty between Moscow and the Western military pact NATO.

The Russian accusation came after the Pentagon announced on October 12 that the U.S. 2nd Cavalry Regiment arrived in the Polish outpost located about 100 miles from Russia's militarized enclave of Kaliningrad.

The latest American troops deployment in the tense Baltic region is said to be part of Washington's effort to bolster allied nations against what they perceive to be a military threat from neighboring Russia.

Vowing to respond, Moscow has severely denounced the U.S. and its NATO allies for undermining Russia's security by closing in on it with hostile forces.

The Russian Defense Ministry has condemned the U.S. deployment and called it a response to ¡°unprecedented media hysteria¡± toward Moscow's massive Zapad- 2017 military exercises held in September mostly in Belarus, the state-run TASS Russian news agency reported. At that time, a number of Western media outlets speculated on how the large-scale Russian military drills may have a permanent influence on the region. Moscow denies such speculation.
The ministry¡¯s spokesman Igor Konashenkov strongly accused the U.S. of ¡°preparing for the aggression¡± by stationing the 2nd Cavalry Regiment across the Russian-Polish border without removing the military equipment of U.S. forces previously posted there, and thus violating the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act, according to TASS.

In addition, Vladimir Shamanov, head of the defense affairs committee for Russia¡¯s lower house of parliament, said the country would consider adding more nuclear-capable Iskander ballistic missiles on its side of the Russian-Polish border as part of its retaliatory actions and to deter a U.S. military buildup in the region.

¡°We will surely not turn a blind eye on this. We will take retaliatory measures,¡± Shamanov was quoted by TASS as saying. ¡°Not just personnel, but combat equipment. For instance, the group of Iskanders, including that in Kaliningrad, may be increased,¡± he added.

Iskander missiles, which can be fitted with a nuclear warhead, are known to be capable of flying up to 500 kilometers (310 miles), a range which allows Russia to target several NATO member states with pinpoint accuracy.

Since Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula taking advantage of political turmoil in neighboring Ukraine in 2014, NATO has immensely augmented its military presence near Russia, especially among the three Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania—and Poland. These four nations were designated by the U.S. last year to host NATO battle groups, but the multinational coalition has expanded its forces beyond thefour countries, prompting further fury from Russia.
