French aircraft maker Airbus is pushing for the development of a new hypersonic aircraft, dubbed ¡°Concorde Mark 2¡±, which could cut the journey time between London and New York to just about one hour.

The application to patent an "ultra-rapid air vehicle and related method of aerial locomotion" has been approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office in July - just over four years after it was filed, allowing the jetliner to fly in the sky in near future.

The invention involves turbojets and ramjets - a type of jet engine - and a rock etbefore it was retired in 2003 Airbus' proposed design could therefore shave four and a half hours off Concorde's journey time between London and New York, according to foreign media reports.

Traditional commercial aircraft take around seven hours to travel between the two cities. In addition, Airbus predicts the patented craft will be able to complete trips like Paris to San Francisco or Tokyo to Los Angeles in just three hours.

According to Airbus, the new supersonic aircraft is expected to peak at more than 100,000 feet and will have a limit of 20 passengers. It will be able to haul two to three tons of cargo for a distance of approximately 8,850 km (5,500 miles).

After the Airbus plane lifts off the runwa,y it will climb vertically like the space shuttle powered by the equipped turbojet engine and the rocket motor that retract intothe fuselage as the plane approaches the speed of sound. The ramjet will replace the turbojet engine.

In its application, Airbus said that the market envisaged for the new supersonic aircraft is principally that of business travel and VIP passengers. However, it also sees a future for the plane in military operations, such as reconnaissance and ultra-rapid transport of high added-value goods as well as equipped elite commandos.

Concorde, which was run by Air France and British Airways, was taken out of service in 2003 amid falling passenger numbers after a lethal crash in 2000. Since its launching in 1976, the Concorde was beset by complaints of sonic booms and noise pollution created by its four Rolls-Royce Olympus turbojet engines which consequently prompted the aircraftto be prevented from operating over land.

Instead, the 14 production Concordesspent their 27-year career shuttling wellheeledVIPs across the Atlantic.
