China, US hold first joint naval drills in Atlantic




남중국해 문제와 관련된 갈등에도 불구하고 미국과 중국 해군이 대서양에서 첫 합동 군사훈련을 실시했다.
중국 관영 언론과 외신에 따르면 미국과 중국은 지난 11월 초 미국 플로리다주 잭슨빌에 위치한 해군기지인 메이포트항 인근 해상에서 양국 군함들이 참가하는 합동 해군훈련을 실시했다.
이는 미·중 양국이 남중국해 문제를 놓고 첨예한 갈등을 빚으면서도 양국 간 군사 교류는 지속적으로 진행하고 있음을 보여준다. 중국 언론에 따르면 중국 해군이 대서양에서 미국과 합동 훈련을 한 것은 이번이 처음이라고 보도했다.

The United States and China have been conducting joint naval exercises in the Atlantic Ocean amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.
According to China’s state media and other foreign news reports, the navies of the two countries carried out a joint naval training session on the waters off the Naval Station Mayport, a U.S. naval base in Jacksonville, Fla., early November.
The U.S.-China drills represent that the two superpowers continue military exchanges despite the current extreme conflict over the South China Sea issue. The Chinese media said it was the first time that China’s Navy has held a joint exercise with the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic Ocean.

이호 등 3척이 참가했으며, 중국 측에서는 미사일 구축함인 지난(濟南)함, 호위함 이양(益陽)함, 보급선 첸다오후(千島湖)함 등이 참가했다. 이 3척의 중국 함정들은 미국 우호 방문일정에 따라 메이포트 해군기지를 방문했으며 미국 동부연안을 방문한 최초의 중국 해군함정들로 기억되게 되었다.
양국 함정들은 오전 10시부터 6시간 동안 해상통신, 편대 운항, 구조 훈련 등을 실시했다고 중국 인터넷매체 펑파이(澎湃)신문은 전했다.
이번 대서양 합동 군사훈련의 중국측 지휘관인 중국 152 해군편대 왕젠쉰(王建勛) 대령은 전체 훈련이 순조롭게 진행됐다고 밝히면서 양국 함정간 협동능력의 제고, 양국 해군 간의 상호 신뢰증진 효과 등에 의미를 부여했다.

The United States deployed three naval vessels including the missile destroyer USS Mason and the guided missile cruiser USS Monterey to the exercise, while China dispatched its latest warships -- the guided-missile destroyer Jinan, the guided-missile frigate Yiyang, and the fleet's oil tanker Qiandao Hu. The exercise coincided with the three vessels’ goodwill port visit to the Naval Station Mayport to become the first Chinese warships that have sailed the east coast of the United States.
The drills, which lasted for six hours from 10 a.m., involved the coordination of maritime communications, fleet operations and rescue missions, according to China’s news website Peng Pai.
Senior Capt. Wang Jianxun, the commander of China's Task Group 152, who led the Chinese fleet, was quoted as saying that the entire exercise progressed smoothly and putting much meaning to the drills contributing to boosting naval cooperation and mutual trust between the two nations.
