China has staged a joint fighter jets exercise with Thailand, one of the major allies of the United States, amid growing tensions across Taiwan Strait since the number three official of the U.S. government visited Taiwan last month. The air forces of the two countries held the 11-day training exercise, codenamed ¡°Falcon Strike 2022,¡° which kicked off at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base on August 14, according to the Chinese National Defense Ministry¡¯s statement and international news reports. ¡°Falcon Strike,¡± an annual exercise which started in 2015, resumed this year after being put off for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF). The Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force reportedly sent a fleet of six J-10C/S fighter jets,, a JH-7AI fighter-bomber and a Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to take part in the joint drills with Thailand. The RTAF was known to deploy five Swedish Saab Gripen multirole fighters. three Franco-German Dassault/ Dornier Alpha Jet attack aircraft, one Saab 340 AEW&C. During the air force exercise, Chinese warplanes swarmed across the Taiwan Strait, according to the news reports. ¡°The joint training exercise aims to enhance mutual trust and friendship between the air forces of the two countries, deepen practical cooperation and promote the continuous development of China-Thailand comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership,¡± said the Chinese Ministry¡¯s statement at the time of the exercise. ¡°Falcon Strike 2022¡± was one of China¡¯s major mass military exercises in the sea and airspace around Taiwan that Beijing regards as one of its provinces and claims that the self-ruled island state will eventually be under its control again in the near future. The August exercise also came after a visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, earlier in the month. Many international pundits saw the resumption of the ¡°Falcon Strike¡± exercise as China¡¯s retaliation to Pelosi¡¯s unexpected visit to the island state. The United States, like most other countries, does not officially recognize Taiwan. However, it sustains strong ties with the island state, selling weapons for Taiwan to defend itself.
