The British, Japanese, and Italian companies
leading the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP)
have agreed to launch an equally-owned joint venture
dedicated to the multinational program to develop a
next-generation, stealth-capable fighter jet.
GCAP is a multinational initiative led by the
United Kingdom, Japan, Italy to jointly develop
a sixth-generation stealth fighter expected to
operate with drones and be in service by 2035.
The program, announced by the governments
of the three countries in December 2022, aims to
replace the Eurofighter Typhoon in service with
the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Italian Air Force,
and the Mitsubishi F-2 in service with the Japan
Air Self-Defense Force. A year later, the program
was cemented with a treaty signed by the three
signatories in Japan.

design, development and construction of the
new fighter. JAIEC is a company jointly funded
by Japan¡¯s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the
Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies, the
news reports said.
The agreement will have to go for approval to
the national regulatory authorities before the new
joint venture is formally established in mid-2025.
The joint venture will be headquartered in
London to maximize collaboration and alignment
with the GCAP International Government
Organization (GIGO) which will also be based
in the U.K. The two entities will work together
to support the fighter program to efficiently and
timely proceed without any hitch, the reports said.
¡°The new joint venture will be accountable
for the design, development and delivery of the
next generation combat aircraft and will remain
the design authority for GCAP for the life of the
product, which is expected to go out beyond
2070,¡± the joint venture¡¯s founders were quoted
as saying in a statement upon the signing of the
agreement on the new venture.
¡°Today¡¯s agreement is a culmination of many
months working together with our industry partners
and is testament to the hard work of everyone
involved in this strategically important programme,¡±
BAE Systems chief executive Charles Woodburn was
quoted as saying at the signing event.
The Reuters news agency quoted BAE managing
director Herman Claesen as saying the door of
the new joint venture ¡°is open to other partners
to join,¡± including Saudi Arabia which has shown
interest in the program. He added, ¡°But ultimately
it is the call of the three governments.
