Chinese scientists are developing nextgeneration engines that will propel a super-heavy rocket, tentatively named Long March 9 that is to be used for Bejing¡¯s manned moon and Mars exploration programs, according to the China Daily.

The official Chinese English-language newspaper quoted Tan Yonghua, President of the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology, as saying last month, ¡°Engineers at my academy are researching a liquid oxygen/kerosene engine with a thrust of 500 metric tons and a liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen engine with a thrust of 200 tons that will be used on thefuture heavy-lift rocket.¡± The engines will be able to allow the Long March 9 a launch weight of 3,000 tons altogether and a maximum payload of 130 tons to low Earth orbit, which is powerful enough to fulfil a manned mission to the moon, Tan added.

The success of China¡¯s governmentapproved deep-space projects including Mars exploration programs will depend on the new rocket because existing ones, including the Long March 5, are not powerful enough, Tan was quoted as saying.

The most advanced rocket engines China has been developing to date are known to be those used on the Long March 5 which is scheduled to be first launched between late September and early October. It reportedly features a maximum launch weight of 867 tons, with a maximum payload of 25 tons.

Chinese experts predict that the development of the engines for the LongMarch 5 and 9 would take about 10 and 15years, respectively.

An emerging space power, China is notf ar behind the United States and Russia in such project as the establishment of a spac estation and dispatching a manned mission to the moon or the Mars.
