USS John C. Stennis sent to S.Korea to join wargames

미국의 대표적인 전략무기 중의 하나인 핵추진 항공모함 존 C. 스테니스호가 국내에서 진행된 주요 한미 합동군사훈련에 참가하기 위해지난 달 중순 해군 부산작전기지에 입항했다.

미 해군당국에 따르면 존 C. 스테니스 항공모함타격단은 존 C. 스테니스(CVN-74)호를비롯해 9천200 t급 구축함인 스톡데일(DDG-106)함, 정훈(DDG-93)함, 윌리엄 P. 로런스(DDG-110)함, 9천800t급 순양함인 모바일베이(CG-53)함.

또 배수량이 10만3천t에 달하는 니미츠급 항공모함인 존 C. 스테니스호는 약 7천여 명의승조원을 자랑하며 비행갑판 면적이 축구장의3배인 1만8천211㎡에 달해 미 해군 호넷(F/A-18) 전투기, 프라울러(EA-6B) 전자전기, 호크아이(E-2C) 조기경보기 등 항공기 80여대를
탑재한다.

게다가 존 C. 스테니스 항모타격단은 미 해군이 지난 한 해 동안 심혈을 기울여 온 ‘녹색전단’의 핵심부대로, 작전수행 능력을 강화시키는데 대체연료를 사용하는 등 고도의 에너지 효율화를 실천해 왔다. 두 개의 핵 원자로가 거의 무한대에 가까운 동력과 최대 시속 약56 킬로미터의 기동력을 존 C. 스테니스 항공모함에 제공하고 있는 것으로 알려진다.

미국방부가 한미 연합훈련에 -- 컴퓨터 시뮬래이션 위주의 키리졸브(Key Resolve) 훈련과·실제 군사기동훈련인 독수리(Foal Eagle)연습 -- 광범위한 파괴력을 가진 전략무기인존 C. 스테니스 항공모함을 한국에 보낸 것은올해 4차 핵실험과 장거리 미사일 발사를 잇따라 감행한 북한에 대한 군사력 과시이자 강력한 경고메시지로 보인다.

북한 김정은 정권에 대한 경고로 미국은 북한의 핵실험 나흘 만인 지난 1월 10일 전략폭격기 B-52를 한국에 전개했고 북한의 장거리 미사일 발사 후 수 일만에 스텔스 전투기 F-22 4대와 핵추진 잠수함 노스캐롤라이나호를 한국에 파견했다.존 C 스테니스 항모 강습단은 방한 기간 중 우리 해군과 연합훈련을 실행함과 동시에 해당 지역 주민들과 문화교류 활동도 하는 것으 로 알려졌다.

The nuclear-powered USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74), one of major U.S. strategic arms, made a port visit to Busan in the middle of last month to take part in two major joint annual military exercises between South Korea and the United States. U.S. Naval Forces Korea said that the 103,000-ton aircraft supercarrier, the flagship of the 7,000-sailor-strong USS John C. Stennis Strike Group (JCSSG), was joined by three other guided-missile destroyers -- the 9,200-ton USS Stockdale, USS Chung-Hoon and USS William P. Lawrence -- in the visit to South Korea’s largest port city of Busan, 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul, along with the 9,800-ton USS Mobile Bay cruiser. The USS John C. Stennis, a Nimitz-class carrier, boasts its 18,211 square-meter of open deck space which is equivalent to three football fields, capable of being loaded with some 80 navy and marine aircraft including the F/A-18 Hornet and EA-6B Prowler combat jets as well as the E-2C Hawkeye early-warning aircraft.

In addition, the JCSSG is the centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet, a year-long initiative highlighting the U.S. Navy’s efforts to use energy-efficiency measures and alternative fuel to bolster its operational capability. Two nuclear reactors provide almost unlimited range of operation and a maximum speed of some 56 km per hour to the aircraft carrie.r The Pentagon dispatched the aircraft carrier to join the computer-simulated Key Resolve and Foal Eagle combined field trainin gexercises, which kicked off on March 7 for a run until March 18 and April 30, respectively, as a show of force and a strong warning message in response to the North’s recent provocations -- its fourth nuclear test and long-range rocket launch -- earlier this yea.r The U.S. flew a B-52 strategic bomber over South Korea on Jan. 10 soon after the North carried out the nuclear test. After the longrange rocket launch in February, four F-22 stealth fighter jets and a nuclear-powered submarine, the USS North Carolina, were also sent to the Korean Peninsula as a warning to the North’s Kim Jong-un regime.
