US aircraft carrier may join ROK-US military drill

미국 항공모함 칼빈슨호가 5,500여명의 승무원과 함께 지난 달 괌 해군기지에 도착한 것으로 확인되었다.

한국의 연합통신은 서울 군 소식통의 말을빌어 니미츠급 원자력 항공모함인 칼빈슨호의괌 방문은 3월로 예정된 한미연합훈련인 키리졸브 연습에 참가하기 위한 사전 포석인 것으로 보인다고 보도했다.

군 관계자들은 미국이 핵과 미사일 위협을가하고 있는 북한에 대해 강력한 억제능력을보여주기 위해 칼빈슨호를 KR 연습과 FE 훈련에 참가시킬 것으로 관측하고 있다.

총 길이 333미터, 넓이 40.8미터의 위용을 자랑하는 칼빈슨호는 지난 2월 5일 모항인 샌디에이고에서 출항해 서태평양 해역에서 임무를수행해왔다.

군의 한 소식통은 “서태평양 해상에서 임무를 수행하던 칼빈슨호가 오늘 괌 기지에 도착했다”면서 “괌 기지에서 새로운 임무를 부여받을 것으로 보인다”고 밝혔다.

한미 양국군 최고지휘관들은 최근 서울에서만나 북한의 추가적인 무력도발에 대응하기위한 두 동맹국간의 공약을 다시 한 번 확인하고 강력한 연합방위력 구축에 합의했다.

The Yonhap news agency of the Republicof Korea (ROK) quoted Seoul’s military sources as saying the Nimitz-class nuclearpowered carrier’s visit to Guam could be a preparation to partake in an annual joint military drill, codenamed “Key Resolve,” between the ROK and the United States slated for March.

A possible mobilization of the USS Carl Vinson for the Key Resolve exercise is aimed at deterring North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats, the sources said The 333 meter-long, 40.8 meter-wide carrier has reportedly departed from Naval Base San Diego early January, which is the principal homeport of the U.S. Pacific Fleet for a regular deployment to the Western Pacific.

“The Carl Vinson arrived at a naval base in Guam,” a military source was quoted by Yonhap as saying at that time. “The carrier appears to be readying for a new mission.” Top defense officials from the ROK and the United States recently met in Seoul and reaffirmed the two allies’ commitment to forming a strong joint defense posture against North Korea’s possible military provocations.
