Widely recognized as the most iconic photograph of the Korean War, Sergeant Bill Redifer of
Pennsylvania comforts fellow soldier Vincent Nozzolillo of Massachusetts after a battle on 18 August
1950. Both men are assigned to the 1st Battalion/5th Regimental Combat Team and the photo was
taken by combat photographer Sergeant First Class Al Chang. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, the
image depicts a grief-stricken American infantryman after learning that his buddy has been killed in
action. In the background, a medic (Corporal Joseph Villaflor of Eleele, Kauai, the Territory of Hawaii)
methodically fills out a casualty tag.

Military journal visited Army Heritage Center

met with Ron Miller,
the director of the Army Heritage Center

- When was the museum established?
The Army Heritage Museum renovated thebuilding that was originally used for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) onMay 17, 2000 and opened the business firstweek of Jun same year.

- What was the intend and purpose to establish the museum and what does it demonstrate?
The then-8A Commanding General provideda guidance to build the museum marked 50thanniversary of Korean War and the intend wasto build the visitor¡¯s center to welcome KoreanWar Veterans upon their return to Korea.

Director of the center said on Thursday, ¡°wepreserve historical data at the level of USFKand 8A including pictures, maps, documentsboth classified and unclassified.¡±

- Who are the customers?
The customers vary from the active-duty,family members, ROTC cadets, Boy Scoutsand Girl Scouts to Korean War Veterans.

- What is the main display? And when doyou feel proud of your job?

¡°I am currently responsible for maintainingthis facility where UNC/CFC/USFK and 8A have shared ownership. That is immenseresponsibility.¡± said Mr. Miller, the Director ofthe Army Heritage Center.

He introduced an interesting story about thecenter, ¡°I remember one of the veteran whowas awarded medal in Korean War, David B.
Blick. He served as a medic during the War,as his troop was retreating from the battlefield,he realized one the his soldier was missing.

He went back to evacuate him unarmed, and encounter with 6 chinese army. He courageously
fought and defeated all of the enemies only withhis fists and saved his comrade¡¯s life.¡±

And he added, ¡°Our main display is the ¡®Hallof Honor,¡¯ which is unfortunately not opento public at this moment due to the damages.
There, we reserve War Veteran¡¯s awards alongwith their pictures, missions, and stories behind for the each and every one. Imagine only 182 individuals received the medal out of more than1 million warrior who fought for our alliance.¡±

¡°David Blick visited Korea in 2000 for the first time since the Korean War, he wasvery touched by what we preserve here andthanked me for doing this, and that is themoment I appreciate my job.¡±

He continued, he also feel honored when  he has dialogs with young generation such as Boy Scouts or ROTC cadets and explains what
our predecessors contributed to defend this
country.
- How many people are visiting?

It varies based on the situation. We do not expect many visitors after the big events such as 60th anniversary of Korean War which was held not long ago. Since we do not open the¡°Hall of Honor¡± to public, number of visitorshave reduced lately. When it was available, average 50 customers a day, around 250 a week visited. Still 3~4 active-duty members, who are interested in history or whose relatives served in Korean War, are visiting per week.

- When USAG-Yongsan relocate to Pyongtaek, what would happen to the museum?
The Heritage Center will relocate to thePyongtaek Base with other installations, which is good news for us as we will be ableto reopen the center in the bigger and newer location, with better facility. And the
¡®Hall ofHonor¡¯ will be operational as well.
- What made you decide to work for the museum? And what qualifies you as a director?

I was retired in 1991 and started my career as a civilian since. I was always interested in history and the timing was just perfect for me.

I was lucky to get this job. In considerationof keen competition in job market, basic education is required to work here. Bachelor degree in the related filed is required and Master or Ph. Doctor degree is a plus. As I am retired Army officer, it helped me do better at my job. And we also have fellow historians working here who have Air Force and Navy specialized experiences.
